After Surgery

You may resume all your preoperative medications unless instructed otherwise by your doctor.
Insure that you have your post operative prescriptions filled before you depart.

You may remove the dressing on the second day after surgery and you may shower, do not scrub or soak the wound, and then apply a dry dressing to the wound.
Insure that you ambulate at least four times a day.

If you had open abdominal surgery then do not resume vigorous activity or lift any weights greater one kilogram for six weeks.
If you had laparoscopic abdominal surgery then do not resume vigorous activity or lift weights greater than one kilogram for two weeks.
After any ambulatory endovascular procedure you can resume your normal activity right away.

Always call your doctor should you experience any problems post operatively after discharge such as:

  • vomiting,
  • abdominal distention,
  • worsening abdominal pain,
  • fever,
  • bleeding,
  • leg swelling,
  • chest pain ,
  • shortness of breath,
  • redness of the wound,
  • discharge from the wound or
  • increasing pain from the wound.

If you have any of the following symptoms after a colonoscopy, seek medical care right away:

  • severe pain in your abdomen
  • fever
  • bloody bowel movements that do not get better
  • bleeding from the anus that does not stop
  • dizziness
  • weakness

Remember to ask for sick leave note if you need one on the day of surgery.
